Work with passion, not stress – Simon Sinek

Many people go to work every day with dread. The weeks fly by, the stress rises, the inevitable routine kicks in... but what if there was another way?

“Working hard for something
we don't care about is called stress
Working hard for something
we love is called passion
- Simon Sinek

Renowned British author and leadership guru Simon Sinek is a beacon of hope in these chaotic times with his steadfast optimism. He inspires millions of people to change and inspires everyone on his path with his books or lectures. A true end boss.

Many people will know him from his famous TED Talk or his book 'Start With Why', in which he explains how a leader can continue to inspire and motivate the people around him, to create a close-knit team that can achieve any goal through cooperation. He follows the 'Golden Circle' model. But how did Sinek come up with that, and what is so important?

Simon Sinek at the university

Simon studied cultural anthropology at Brandeis University (USA), where he mainly studied the diversity of people and mutual differences in culture. Understanding was central to this.

Sinek then chose to enter the advertising world. He held numerous top positions at renowned international advertising agencies such as Euro RSCG and Oglivy & Mather. His assignment was to develop communication platforms for several big names such as JPMorgan Chase, Northwest Airlines, OppenheimerFunds and many more. He knew better than anyone how to develop strategies that would be central for these companies to reach the top in Asia.

A new start with Sinek Partners

Sinek founded his own company in 2002: Sinek Partners. In it he set himself the goal of inspiring as many entrepreneurs, leaders and bosses as possible to the 'Why' of their company, which was often missing.

All this with the ultimate goal that a vast majority of employees can perform their work with satisfaction and derive satisfaction from it.

“A culture is strong when people
work with each other , for each other.
A culture is weak when people work
against each other , for themselves.”
- Simon Sinek

Following up on the quote from this boss, he actually shows what is wrong with society and what can be the core of many companies. Often there are people at the top who only think about money, power, expansion… about themselves. But this will never benefit the employees.

While it is optimal for leaders and bosses to work together with their employees, listen to them and advise them. Create a close-knit team with these methods that can think freely and unconventionally, and soon that team can push the boundaries of the company.

The 'Golden Circle'

At the beginning of the text you quickly read something about the 'Golden Circle'. Simply explained, it has three rings, from outside to inside:

3. What
'What' stands for the result of the company. Think of profit or the fulfillment of certain needs with services or sales of products.

2. How
This concerns which actions are taken to achieve the result (What) and which core values are used for this (Why). Think of distinctiveness or a Unique Selling Point.

1. Why
According to Sinek, the most important factor for every company: What is the purpose of the company? This certainly does not mean 'expansion' or 'profit', because those are clearly forms of 'the What'. No, why does the company exist? With what conviction? With what faith? What does the company do for people?

What Sinek quickly realized was that many companies often started with number 3, 'what'. They had no further goal in mind and often did not know how to inspire their employees in a positive way. And why? They were only focused on the result. Not the way there or why, but only the purely selfish goals. The employees of these types of companies are often unmotivated, count the hours and dread going to work.

Simon believes that a company can only succeed if you work from the inside out. From the 'why'. A company that starts with strong core values, with a strong conviction, will much faster and easier inspire its employees to do something that makes a difference , in a free, positive environment with a close-knit team.

“Working hard for something
we don't care about is called stress
Working hard for something
we love is called passion
- Simon Sinek

This quote from earlier simply fits perfectly. If people work without a goal and mostly alone, they will get stressed faster. But if people can work together from an inspiring 'why', and deliver a fantastic result with this, they will do their work with passion and go home with satisfaction .

The Infinite Game

Simon wrote a new bestseller in 2018: 'The Infinite Game'. In it he describes that things like politics, companies, the world, etc. are all infinite and constantly changing. So, the rules must be constantly adjusted to realize the desired vision of the future.

Sinek is far from finished in this world and will continue to work to improve the world. A walking source of inspiration that you can do nothing but respect. Simon Sinek can therefore really be called a real end boss and will certainly go down in history.
